Hofstede's cultural model is the internationally recognized standard for understanding cultural differences. The system initially started with four dimensions but was expanded to six with the asisstance of Dr. Michael Bond and Dr. Michael Minkov. The six dimensions are:
1. Power Distance Index (PDI) - Does inequality exist and is it accepted by the people with and without power.
2. Individualism versus Collectivism (IDV) - The strength of the ties people have to others in their community.
3. Masculinity versus Femininity (MAS) - Distribution of roles between men and women. Level of focus on the quality of life.
4. Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) - How well people cope with anxiety. How predictable and controllable can life be made.
5. Pragmatic versus Normative (PRA) - Long Term Orientation, the degree to which people need to explain the inexplainable, tied to religiosity and nationalism.
6. Indulgence versus Restraint (IVR) - People's drive , emotions, how they enjoy life and have fun.
